So why the nickname of Frozen Crane?
The nickname "Frozen Crane" is a play on words that reflects both Braun Sensei's martial arts background and his Wisconsin roots.
As a dedicated student of Feeding Crane Kung Fu, the "Crane" portion is an obvious tribute to the art he studies. The "Frozen" comes from the fact that Braun Sensei was born and raised in Wisconsin, where cold temperatures, snow, and frozen ground are simply part of everyday life for several months each year.
Training outdoors in the winter is nothing unusual for him. In fact, Braun Sensei is well known for holding classes outside whenever it's "warm enough"—which, by his standards, means around 35°F (2°C), even if there's still snow covering the ground.
Braun Sensei has often joked that he feels far more comfortable training in the cold than in the summer heat. Over the years, that combination of Feeding Crane Kung Fu and Wisconsin winters naturally earned him the nickname "Frozen Crane."
